Why smartphone gaming suits so many people in 2023

Whether you’re an avid Pokemon Go player or regularly coming under attack in Fortnite, it has been impossible to ignore the enhanced offering from the mobile gaming category in recent times. Of course, the popularity of gaming on a smartphone device isn’t exactly new in 2023, but the improved products that we can typically access with ease certainly are.

Nowadays, gaming on our miniature communication tools has never been so popular. A selection of interesting statistics highlight just how far mobile gaming has come, be it the $184 billion generated in 2022 by all types of mobile games or the fact that this continually expanding area of gaming is expected to grow to $419 billion by 2027, according to Statista. Essentially, smartphone gaming’s package is appealing to people everywhere in 2023. Below is a few reasons as to why.

A convenient gaming opportunity

First and foremost, the main reason why smartphone gaming appeals to millions of us on earth in 2023 is due to the convenience it provides. Compared to PC and console gaming, for instance, smartphone gaming can be enjoyed while out and about, therefore providing a portable gaming service that can be loaded up in seconds. The games are genuinely fun these days, they generally cater for casual gaming audiences, and they don’t require the same time and dedication as a console product typically needs. Whether it’s through an internet browser or in the App Store, games on a mobile phone device can be sampled with ease alongside a social media binge or while talking to loved ones on WhatsApp. For us busy humans of today who want instant entertainment that can be fired up in seconds, gaming on our phones represents the perfect option.

A diverse collection of new and improved games

In the past, smartphone gaming’s offering was fairly limited. Games like Snake initially appealed before a wave of puzzle and brain training products took over. Nowadays, though, given the improvements made in the smartphones of today, the games they can handle are now even more detailed. Offering much-improved graphics and better gameplay overall, the sheer amount of viable gaming opportunities is impressive. From console-quality releases that have broken records like PUBG Mobile, to glorious adventure titles like Genshin Impact, plus a themed slot game like Esmeralda, a release that is based on the heroine from Victor Hugo’s exciting tale “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, there is something for everyone on a smartphone device. Games can also be improved further with the purchase of a gaming accessory, with mobile gamers opting for products like earbuds and joysticks.

 Stigma around gaming has changed

Chen originally went viral in 2018 after an image was shown of him playing Pokémon Go with 11 phones attached to his bike.

The image above shows Chen San-yuan, the Taiwanese “Pokémon Go grandpa,” has evolved his bike into a new form: a peacock-esque contraption with 64 smartphones mounted on the front. Chen originally went viral in 2018 after an image was shown of him playing Pokémon Go with 11 phones attached to his bike. Over the last two years, this iconic gamer has added more phones to his arsenal. In 2019, he was using 45 smartphones concurrently as he biked around trying to catch ‘em all.

Another key reason behind the rise in the amount of smartphone gamers could be down to the notable changes in the stigma around gaming. In previous times, gaming was seen as a negative influence on people, perhaps fuelling a sedentary lifestyle and only really being associated with younger audiences. That couldn’t be further from the truth in the modern environment, though. In 2023, people are keeping fit while gaming through augmented reality products like Pokemon Go, while the sheer amount of gaming products that have come to the fore has resulted in a diverse collection of games that appeal to a wide variety of target audiences. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see elderly people exploring puzzle games on a smartphone device, while parents also fight off boredom with games like Subway Surfers and Candy Crush Saga. Put simply, everyone is gaming on a smartphone device right now, and it’s easy to see why given the enhanced products that are aimed at us all.
