Crocheting a hand bag

Crocheting a hand bag

I finished making this hand bag recently.

First i crocheted the bag with nylon cord onto a pre made base.

I used a pink nylon cord specifically designed for crochet and macramé.

I used a small goodordering drawstring bag on the inside. the bag can be used with or without the liner bag. The liner bag ties this bag to the other goodordering bags, and also provides some security for the contents.

I like the mixed material combination of the bag. the shape was inspired by “rope bags” used by professional climbers.

The bags is strong and very functional, with the holes and cord loops used to store carabiners and other tools that climbers use.

I really like the style of these bags and the size also lends itself to a handbag. The utilitarian style of these rope bags ties in with the paracord i wanted to use in my crocheted bag.

Fashion bags that use these functional materials already exist such as this one above made from woven nylon straps (webbing) and paracord. I wanted mine to be stylish but also fun and pay homage to the rope bags that i was inspired by, hence the hanging vintage keyrings.

I have always loved ‘collections’ and i already had a pretty big collection of vintage keyrings. I thought that these keyrings really come into their own when they are all together as a collection rather than just used individually. So that gave me the idea to use them all on the crocheted bag together- the 80s, 90s vibe in full technicolour!
