The items of clothing, shoes and accessories that i don't use as much any more are placed into a box, when i get a spare moment i'll take an item from the box and photograph it with my phone and then upload it onto vinted. The whole process only takes about 5 minutes.
Here is my vinted profile :) HERE It has really changed the way that i buy things and has encouraged me to downsize my wardrobe and sell off items from my own collection.
The beauty of these apps that allow people to buy and sell second hand clothing, is that the buyer (me) gets to fulfill my appetite for online shopping but with a lot less guilt. Shopping as an activity can be relaxing and fun. A way to stave off depression and boredom, but traditionally this has meant that irresponsible spending is only a few clicks away. Vinted and ebay have really helped me to shop more sustainably whilst still giving me the dopamine hit of buying things online.
Facebook marketplace is also a similar platform that is very easy to access, allowing people to have an online garage sale. I think marketplace has really taken off and the simplicity of it makes it very accessible to everyone. There are of course dangers - wherever there is money changing hands, there are criminals lurking!
There are some high end websites / apps that focus on designer labels such as Poshmark and Vestiare Collective. Vestiaire offers an optional ‘authentication’ feature on items, so the product you’ve ordered is first checked and approved before being sent to you.
We at Goodordering sell our own in-house designed panniers and cycling bags, but we also sell some hardware called the Klik Fix pannier rack - made by German company Rixen Kaul, that allow you to upcycle your very own bag or backpack into a bicycle pannier bag.
The hardware attaches through small holes that need to be made in the bag and then the rail is attached using screws and round backing plates.
There are many websites that focus on womenswear, but there are also a few that specialise in menswear such as Grailed. This US based company is hailed as the world’s most popular menswear resale marketplace. They have vintage as well as designerwear. However, here are 5 of the biggest second hand market places.
1. eBay: eBay is one of the largest online marketplaces for buying and selling new and used items. Users can list items for auction or set a fixed price for immediate purchase. With its global reach and various categories, eBay offers a wide range of products, from electronics to clothing, making it a versatile platform for second-hand selling.
2. Facebook Marketplace: Facebook Marketplace allows users to buy and sell items locally within their community. It's integrated into the Facebook app, making it convenient for users to browse listings and communicate with sellers. Its focus on local transactions makes it ideal for selling larger items like furniture or appliances, as buyers can pick up items in person.
3. Craigslist: Craigslist is a popular classified advertisements website where users can find a wide array of goods and services, including second-hand items. Listings are organized by location, allowing users to find local deals easily. While it lacks some of the advanced features of other platforms, Craigslist remains a go-to option for many users due to its simplicity and broad user base. In the UK Gumtree is similar to Craigslist.
4. Depop: Depop is a mobile-focused marketplace that caters to fashion enthusiasts looking to buy and sell unique clothing and accessories. It has a strong social aspect, allowing users to follow each other, like items, and communicate directly. Depop's emphasis on trendy and vintage fashion items attracts a younger demographic and fosters a sense of community among users.
5. OfferUp: OfferUp is a mobile app designed for local buying and selling, similar to Facebook Marketplace. Users can list items for sale and communicate with potential buyers within the app. OfferUp offers features such as user ratings and secure payments to help build trust between buyers and sellers. Its user-friendly interface and focus on local transactions make it a convenient option for second-hand selling.
Sustainability is something that is all of our responsibility. Using these second hand apps and websites to sell un-used items is a great way to get a bit of cash for items that you don't use and at the same time allow customers to buy something they need second hand rather than new. Ingenious huh!
]]>I downloaded an article by the UK cycling association which outlines the possible causes and solutions to this dire situation, also i will outline a few female owned cycling businesses which are worth shouting out about.
Research on equity in the workplace points to multiple causative factors, including difficulty finding a work–life balance; lack of appropriate working environment; lack of training and life-long learning opportunities or inadequate targeted recruitment; persistence of stereotypes; harassment; and bullying4. Other studies highlight discrimination, lack of supportive policies and facilities, and lack of role models as key barriers. Nine in ten women working in sport report facing barriers when entering the industry, and half believe they are paid less than men for the same work. The World Economic Forum estimates it will take another 151 years to close the global economic gender gap (the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed the rate of progress), while data is still too patchy even to estimate gaps for racial equity and LGBTQ+ and disability inclusion6.
Research by Accenture found that 41% of shoppers removed at least 10% of their business from a retailer for their lack of focus on diversity, equity and inclusion
Additionally, the report found that companies with a gender inclusive business culture have a 59% probability of achieving more creativity, innovation and openness. This has to be a good thing. A positive corporate culture attracts good people and those good people make the business more profitable and successful.
In addition to the huge inbalance between male and female cyclists, just 14% of ethnic minority groups, 12% of disabled people and 19% of LGBQ+ people cycle regularly19. This underrepresentation in participation inevitably impacts upon the desirability of a career in the cycling industry for these groups today.
Other similar studies highlight gender discrimination, lack of supportive policies and facilities and female role models as key barriers for women. A 2022 report on British female entrepreneurs additionally highlighted access to finance, discrimination and self-doubt, unequal sharing of chores/childcare and a lack of female role models and professional networks as significant barriers faced by female founders, compared with their male counterparts
Sustrans and ARUP warns that the needs of many marginalised groups have been ignored, with 74 per cent of people in urban ethnic minority groups currently not cycling, despite 55 per cent of people in these groups stating that they would like to start (compared to 37 per cent of White people).
Besides the cost barrier of getting a bike, which reportedly stops 20 per cent of people from ethnic minority groups from cycling, other factors include a lack of confidence in skills and a lack of facilities – including safe storage or changing rooms at home and work – stopping 33 per cent and 25 per cent of people in these groups from riding respectively.
I was happy to find the Queers on wheels instagram page where queer and like minded people get together for rides - both long and short. They are using very innovative methods to increase the visibility of queer people on bicycles including recruiting on grindr, using Heylo for poeple to keep track of rides and regularly posting information on instagram. They do things like laps in regents park as well as longer rides to essex.

Here are some fun facts about cycling and plants. If you ever wondered why you get a wonderful feeling when riding through a flower filled park on a bicycle on a sunny day, here are some reasons!
1. Photosynthesis Power: Plants along cycling routes play a crucial role in oxygenating the air through photosynthesis, providing cyclists with fresh, clean air to breathe as they ride.
2. Natural Scents: Cycling near blooming flowers or fragrant plants can enhance the sensory experience, with scents like lavender or jasmine often present along paths, adding to the enjoyment of the ride.
3. Natural Fuel Stops: Some cycling routes pass by fruit-bearing trees like apple or orange trees, providing cyclists with natural fuel in the form of snacks to refuel during their journey.
4. Shade Providers: Trees and large plants along cycling trails offer shade, allowing cyclists to take breaks from the sun and cool down during hot rides, enhancing comfort and safety.
5. Ecosystem Diversity: Cycling through different plant ecosystems, such as forests, wetlands, or meadows, exposes riders to diverse flora and fauna, enriching their understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
This bicycle loaded up with flowers in Hanoi, Vietnam is a joyous sight! Deliverying flowers by bicycle has also proven to be a profitable business in countries such as UK and the USA.
Here are some businesses who deliver flowers by bicycle in the USA in small cities that make this possible. With the introduction of cargo bikes this is even more viable and sustainable.
1. **BloomThat**: BloomThat provides eco-friendly bicycle delivery in select cities across the United States.

This bike case is the perfect valentines gift for your loved one, the gift that keeps on giving as you can collect flowers on your way to work and it will always put a smile on your face. My kids often collect flowers on the way home from school pick up and this little bicycle vase would be perfect for me!
Here is some wheat grass growing within the spokes of a bicycle i'm not sure how this works and actually it gives me goosebumps on my arms to look at but it shows that plans and nature can be attached to bicycles especially those which are stored outdoors. The little elasticated pots are also an ingenious design and bring the rider even closer to nature especially in an urban setting. Novel bike accessories are always a fun gift idea for a bike lover.
This bike lock below looks quite lightweight and not a great one for central london but i can think of other locations where this would work perfectly well.
Bike locks have not changed much over the years and always looks so brutal, but not this one. I love the idea of a bike lock that inspired a different feeling for the user. Read more about the Mooki noodle Ivy bike lock here.
Bicycles have been used to transport 'things' for many years especially in Asia - China, Vietnam and Thailand. With the development of e-bikes, the loads and the distance travelled can both be further increased.
Did you know that the roots of the bicycle actually trace back to ancient China? Yeah, it's pretty cool! Way back in the 9th century, Chinese inventors crafted the first prototypes of what we now recognize as bicycles. These early contraptions, called "velocipedes," were basically wooden frames with wheels attached and were propelled by pushing with the feet. They weren't quite as sleek or fancy as today's bikes, but hey, they got the job done! Over time, this nifty invention spread to Europe and underwent all sorts of transformations, eventually evolving into the modern bicycles we ride today. So, next time you hop on your bike, just think—you're carrying on a tradition that started centuries ago in China!
Your bike is a great way to show off your sustainable credentials and bring you closer to nature. Here are the main ways that bikes connect with plants that are worth exploring.
1. Transporting flowers by bicycle are viable businesses
2. There are a number of bike accessories such as panniers and tiny planters that allow you to carry plants on your bike.
3. You can go on bike tours that specialise in seeing flowers and cycling in nature - for all ages and levels.
1. Get yourself a comfortable bike with the seat and handlebars at the correct height. A step through bike is easier to ride for begnners as its easier to stop and keep stable with your legs.
2. Wear comfortable clothing, i would avoid flared trousers and long skirts as these can be a hazard for safety. Also getting the right accessories such as helmet, sunglasses and pannier bag can make things easier as a beginner cyclist.
3. Have rest days. Every couple of days, take a rest to allow your body to recover.
4. Measure yourself, i use Strava for bicycles which measures things like time, distance and speed, nothing too detailed but enough for great motivation if you are the analytical type.
5. Make it fun. Choose a nice place to ride to for example a cafe or a park or a book shop and make it an adventure to ride your bike there.
6. Build up your distance and intensity over time and be consistent. If you ride your bike for at least 30 minutes a day will build up your cardiovascular and muscular endurance which will in turn, all you to go on longer rides as time goes on.
7. Try an e-bike. These will allow you to ride for longer and in many ways have more fun as there is less emphasis on tired legs and more emphasis on adventure.
8. Ride with a friend or friends. Especially finding a pal who is more experienced will make riding more fun and easier to get started. Especially if you have someone to follow which will allow you to focus on the fun and dynamics rather than directions.
9. Contrary to the previous point, don't be pressurised to ride at a certain pace. Start slow and don't feel the need to keep up with anyone else.
10. Just start - many people advise not to overthink it too much, just to 'do it' which means just start with short rides and build up your confidence and joy of cycling over time.
11. Make your bike extra seen - whether it be tying a balloon to your handlebars or wearing something very high vis, the 'louder' your bike the more space you will get from traffic!
12. Start out on easy flat terrain.

Image: LUNAR,1622 WristwatchThis relationship is intricate. As fashion takes new turns, jewelry designers and brands respond by crafting pieces that resonate with these changes, whether it's through materials, styles, or themes. Hence, here are tips to ensure your style stays fresh and timeless.
It's almost impossible to ignore fashion trends because they have the following influences on your jewelry choice.
The push towards sustainability and uniqueness in fashion has led to an interesting shift in the materials used in jewelry design. Gone are the days when precious metals and stones were the only options.
Today, you will find jewelry made from non-traditional materials that reflect contemporary fashion trends. In addition, recycled plastics are being transformed into colorful, bold pieces, offering an eco-friendly jewelry option that's both stylish and responsible.
Fabrics, too, are being incorporated into jewelry, with textile-based pieces adding a soft, tactile element to accessories that resonate with the cozy, comfortable fashion trends.
Minimalist jewelry, characterized by simple, clean lines, has become a staple for those who prefer understated elegance. On the other end of the spectrum, the free-spirited and eclectic nature of the boho style has made way for more intricate, layered jewelry pieces that feature natural stones, beads, and metalwork.
Maximalist trends have also seen a resurgence at Learning Jewelry, encouraging the popularity of statement pieces that are bold and eye-catching.
Designers take cues from the fashion industry's seasonal color palettes, incorporating these hues into their jewelry pieces. It means you can easily find jewelry that complements or contrasts with the current fashion colors, allowing for coordinated or statement-making looks.
Textures in jewelry have also evolved, with designers experimenting with different finishes and materials to add depth and interest to their pieces. For example, hammered metal textures reflect a rustic, artisanal trend, while smooth, glossy finishes offer a sleek, modern appeal.
Jewelry is not just an accessory; it's a powerful tool that can enhance and complement fashion trends, giving depth and character to your outfits. Here's how.
The right jewelry can dramatically enhance the silhouette of an outfit, drawing attention to the features you want to highlight. For example, long necklaces can elongate the torso, making them a perfect match for deep V-neck tops or dresses. It accentuates the neckline and adds a visual line that lengthens your overall appearance.
Similarly, cuff bracelets can complement sleeveless tops or dresses by drawing attention to the arms, balancing the exposure with a touch of elegance or boldness, depending on the style of the cuff. Earrings, too, play a crucial role; drop earrings can frame your face and complement the neckline of your outfit, while studs might provide a subtle sparkle that enhances without overpowering.
While fashion trends offer a blueprint for contemporary style, jewelry is a means to personalize these trends and make them your own. For instance, if minimalist fashion is in vogue, a unique geometric bracelet or an artistically designed watch can add an unexpected twist to a simple outfit.
If you're following a more eclectic or maximalist trend, mixing and matching different jewelry pieces, like combining vintage rings with modern, sculptural earrings, can create a unique look.
Global fashion weeks and cultural festivals often set the tone for upcoming trends, including jewelry trends. For instance, a surge in popularity for cultural motifs or materials—like traditional African patterns or Japanese minimalism in jewelry designs—can stem from these events, influencing global fashion trends.
Seasonal changes also dictate jewelry choices; warmer months might see an uptick in colorful, playful pieces that reflect the vibrancy of summer, while cooler seasons could bring about a preference for heavier, more substantial pieces that complement layered clothing.
Keeping up with the ever-changing landscape of fashion can be daunting. Therefore, this section provides practical advice to help you select jewelry that will stand the test of time.
To keep your finger on the pulse of the latest trends in both fashion and jewelry, diving into the world of fashion magazines and social media is essential. Following renowned fashion influencers, designers, and publications can provide inspiration and information. These platforms often showcase the newest jewelry designs, how to style them, and what's currently trending on the runways and streets.
Instagram, for example, is a treasure trove of fashion inspiration, where influencers and designers frequently post their latest finds and creations. Pinterest can serve as a mood board for collecting ideas on different pieces. Additionally, subscribing to or regularly reading reputable fashion magazines online or in print can offer insights into the jewelry trends that are gaining traction, often with professional styling tips.
As the fashion industry moves towards greater environmental responsibility and social consciousness, considering sustainable and ethically produced jewelry options has become increasingly important.
Hence, look for brands that prioritize eco-friendly production methods, use recycled or sustainably sourced materials, and are transparent about their manufacturing processes. Supporting local artisans and companies that adhere to fair trade practices can also have an impact.
As we've explored, staying attuned to the shifts in fashion can significantly enhance your jewelry selection, allowing you to choose pieces that complement your wardrobe and reflect the latest design innovations.

Some say that the Red-White-Blue bag was originally made from nylon canvas, which was invented by Japan, then exported to Taiwan and eventually came to Hong Kong. The canvas was originally used as shelter on construction sites, acting as temporary roofing in squatter areas, and as protection for farmland. It was first used for bags in the 1960s by a tailor, Lee Wah, who created the bag using the canvas from a Taiwan company. Bags were only blue and white in the first place, but red was added to the fabric so that the colour combination represented luck and good fortune.
Across the Indian Ocean, this iconic red-and-white and blue-and-white patterns bag is used in Nigeria, Ghana and many countries in the world. In Ghana, the bag is simply referred to as Ghanaian sack or “Efiewura Sua Me”, literally “help me carry my bag”. The bag has a variety of other names which are listed below.
After the sudden decree by the Nigerian government in 1983, all foreigners without papers were thrown into a state of shock, fear and trepidation. Over a million Ghanaians were thrown into confusion and indecision as they weren’t even ready to return to their crisis-engulfed country, which was actually the reason many had fled to Nigeria in the first place. This mass exodus and the need to transport such loads lead to the phrase, "Ghana Must Go”.
Photo project above by Likhaya Lam
Many of these deported immigrants fled the country without their luggage while those who could pack their belongings used a particular distinctive bag which happened to be the big called ‘Ghana must go’ bag. Since then, the name has spread around the Nigerian populace and has been used as a popular travelling bag and even became an essential fashion material for the African continent.
These alienating names reveal something of the anxiety expressed towards the carriers of these bags in the communities they relocate to. These bags have become global symbols of migration - not only across borders but also within countries. They are objects that carry a home and act as a means of survival for one who does not have much.

Other names for this bag have developed across the world in Turkey, the bags is called the "Türkenkoffer" (Turkish suitcase), in the US, the "Chinatown tote", in Guyana, the "Guyanese Samsonite", and in various other places, the "Refugee Bag". It is often associated with and used for migration.
In Namibia the bag is called "Mwaudako" meaning you also heard it,simple because because people that go for mourning gathering they pack their belongings there, then when they come people they can see they also heard of the death news of a certain person
In Zambia it is called the "ukwa bag" or "sak bag"
In Namibia some call it Mairandopi, some Maidako or 'No problem' because anything can fit in it.
In Mali they call it "Tounka madiana"
In Guyana and the Caribbean it is called the "Guyanese Samsonite"
In Hong Kong they call them "amah bag" named after the domestic servants in hong kong and the bags they carry on their days off
In Turkey, the bags is called the "Türkenkoffer" which translates to “Turkish suitcase”
In the USA it is referred to as the “Chinatown tote”, or the Mexican Bag
In Germany, they are known as Turkish Bags
South Africans call these China bags
Zimbabwe bags
Khumbulekhaya bags
Mashangaanbag
In the UK and other countries this bag is also called the Red-white-blue bag.
Italian designers such as Celine, Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton have glamorised the famous Ghana-must go-print. There was a high fashion version of the bag, produced by Louis Vuitton in 2007. The pattern has also made its way into clothing design.
The design has also inspired other bags such as this tote bag below by opening ceremony. (below)
At Goodordering we were also inspired by this fabric. Rather than being woven, the tartan design is printed on eco, recycled nylon. The concept of cycling to work each day carrying work items in a print originally made for the purpose of migration is a provocative thought.
This photoshoot was done in Brighton in a local laundrette featuring some of the bags from the Goodordering tartan range. Some of the favourite bags include the spacious rolltop backpack and the Billow designed for lounging at the park or beach.

Gone are the days when a helmet was merely a protective gear. Smart helmets now integrate cutting-edge technology to ensure a safer and more connected cycling experience. These helmets come equipped with features such as built-in cameras for recording rides, integrated lights for enhanced visibility, and Bluetooth connectivity to sync with your smartphone. Some even provide real-time navigation and communication, making them an indispensable accessory for the safety-conscious cyclist.
This Goodordering blog post is about the Pro's and Con's of wearing a helmet when cycling and is worth a read.
Traditional bike computers have evolved into sophisticated GPS-enabled devices that offer more than just speed and distance tracking. Modern GPS bike computers provide turn-by-turn navigation, route planning, and performance analytics. Cyclists can now explore new routes confidently, track their progress in real-time, and analyze detailed ride data post-exercise. These devices empower cyclists to set and achieve their fitness goals while navigating unfamiliar terrains seamlessly.
Smart lights not only illuminate the path ahead but also serve as a communication tool for cyclists. Equipped with advanced features such as automatic brightness adjustment based on ambient light conditions and turn signal indicators, these lights enhance visibility and safety. Some models even have built-in sensors that flash brighter when approaching intersections or alert the rider about traffic approaching from behind, fostering a safer cycling environment.
These Goodordering flashing LED slap bands can be easily attached to your arm, leg or bicycle and i have found that my kids love them too which makes the even safer in the dark hours of winter when riding a bicycle.
Fitness trackers designed specifically for cyclists have gained popularity for their ability to monitor and optimize performance. These devices track metrics such as heart rate, calories burned, and sleep patterns, providing valuable insights into overall well-being. With the integration of cycling-specific features, these trackers help cyclists tailor their training regimens, recover effectively, and maximize their riding potential.
Traditional bike locks are being replaced by smart locks that offer enhanced security features. These locks can be controlled via a smartphone app, allowing cyclists to lock and unlock their bikes remotely. Some models come with built-in alarms that activate if tampered with, providing an extra layer of protection against theft. The convenience and peace of mind offered by smart locks make them an essential accessory for any cyclist who values the safety of their bike.
In conclusion, the integration of smart technology into cycling accessories has revolutionized the way cyclists experience and engage with their rides. From safety-enhancing smart helmets to data-driven GPS bike computers, these accessories cater to the diverse needs of modern cyclists. Embracing these innovations not only elevates the cycling experience but also contributes to creating a safer and more connected cycling community. As technology continues to advance, we can only anticipate more exciting developments that will further shape the future of cycling.
Today i went to a local laundrette in East London on Amhurst Road with my trusty photographer (mark from Planet Patrol Gallery), armed with a bunch of our new tartan range (inspired by the laundrette) and thought we'd take a few photos.
I love the utilitarian natures of these spaces, they are public but still private as its a a place where you literally air your dirty laundry. They are usually pretty clean due to the nature of what they are there for and usually coin operated.
This is the tartan billow, so spacious but can pack down flat and compact when not in use,
Laundrettes sort of remind me of a common room in a university dorm. Personally i never stayed in one myself but when i went to visit friends at Cambridge in their shared house, it had that vibe with the signs and common courtesy vibe that it has. People sort of (usually) mind their own business in these places but also acknowledge each other in that they are temporarily sharing a space.
This is the tartan bum bag, soft, spacious and made from recycled materials.
The graphics in this one in east London seem to be stuck in another era, maybe the 80s or 80s. "please do not overload, please do not oversoap", it sort of made me laugh that they give some tips to the laundry rookies visiting the laundrette who may not know how to operate these machines.
I was not aware that you are not supposed to eat or drink in a laundrette, i guess it might differ from place to place, but i am assuming its a deterrence from people ordering deliveroo to the laundrette and sitting there eating their dinner whilst waiting for their wash cycle to finish. I think its a bit harsh that you can't even eat some nuts in there, but then again you don't really want people to be touching the machines with their grubby crisp hands, thereby passing on dirt and grime to your newly washed clothes and laundry.
This is the tartan handlebar bag which is also a satchel bag. It has a strong velcro closure and lots of handy pockets.
I think a laundrette is probably a good place to catch up on some reading or if its empty enough a phone call to someone who you haven't spoken to in a while. I personally was reading a book on shakes and smoothies and juices, new combinations worth trying. I did get a few tips, however i like mainly to stick to my favourites, involving bananas, mangos and peanut butter (not all together).
I'm not sure what the 'X's are on the floor for, maybe it has something to do with covid19 and where you were allowed to stand doing your washing. Its very strange thinking back to those times when even standing too close to someone was awkward and frowned upon.
Today i'd come straight from the gym and a yoga class hence wearing leggings and a bit of a hodge podge outfit. I'm glad i wore my checkerboard socks though, i think they were a good colour contrast to the turquoise tumble dryers.
This is the classic boxy backpack in tartan, it makes a great school bag as it fits a lot inside it but is also compact and lightweight. Like the rest of the tartan laundry range, it is also made from recycled materials.
Laundrettes are a place where pondering is encouraged, watching your clothes go round and round in the washer or tumble dryer makes us wonder about the circular nature of life. I find it quite a peaceful thing to do, sit there, thinking, watching the world go by. Then when you leave you have a load of clean clothes!
If you are a fan of the aesthetic of laundrettes, you must check out the instagram account @coinop_london which shows photos of a huge range of coin operated laundrettes around London. They are truly great, there is even a book that goes alongside the instagram account that you can buy.
When was the last time you washed your duvet? i have never washed my duvet and having seen people wash them in the laundrette today i'm feeling a bit self conscious. Do people wash them and then tumble dry them or JUST tumble dry them?
There are a lot of electronic machines out there right now, they have lots of digital screens etc, I'm not against progress, especially when it comes to practical things in life but from an aesthetic point of view i really like the old school dials and the buttons that you can press. I also think its important to have clear instructionns on the machine. I think this one does quite a good job of explaining what to do. I think everyone leaving home for the first time should be sent to the laundrette with a load of clothes to figure it out for themselves before they qualify for fending for themselves. I just made a mental note to teach my kids how to use the washing machine at home before they get too old. The younger one is 4 right now so i might wait a couple of years.
The dryer in this laundrette takes £1 coins and 25p coins. Its £1 for 6 minutes and 38 seconds. I wonder how they came up with this time? To dry a load with 2 towels, tracksuit pants a few t-shirts and some underwear took about £3 all together. Its quite expensive really, more than i thought it would be. But i guess that just shows how inflation works and how long its been since i have done a load of washing at a laundrette.

]]>So here are some options i found and reasons why they work well for cycling.
Cropped puffer jackets are good for cycling as they are normally not too heavy, but are extremely warm. When you are on your bike you don't want to be weighted down by a super heavy coat. This pink one below is from Monki and is £95.
However, not all puffer jackets are created equally, some are way warmer and also last longer. According to Glamour magazine's 'Best puffer jackets for 2023' article, "Puffer jackets offer a wide range of options that can suit your needs: Down holds in warmth, while feathers provide structure. Look for a higher down percentage if you want your coat to be light as air and easily packable, while a higher feather content means you can trust your puffer coat to hold its shape in inclement weather".
The longer length jackets can be a bit of a pain when cycling with the risk of it getting caught in the chain, especially when it is unzipped. However the mid length coat is perfect for cycling because it keeps your legs a bit warmer in the cold but won't get in the way.
This one is from M&S and is called "Borg Quilted Hooded Puffer Jacket", at £75 it is quite good value. What i like about this is that it is a hybrid jacket with pockets. The fleece material is relatively light weight but most importantly it is easy to clear, you can just throw in washing machine and it also dries quickly being fleece.
If you are more the layering kind of person, you can invest in a good wind breaker which can add a surprising amount of warmth as it stops the wind from chilling your body. If you can find one which is not too sporty, then you can also use it as a regular coat. Right now, the athleisure style is in fashion so these kinds of coats can be found in fashion stores not just outdoor shops.
This one above is from Sweaty Betty and is £210, it is waterproof and windproof and also features reflective details.
These types of coats had their origins in the hiking and climbing world, but now have found their way into mainstream fashion.
Gilets are good for cycling becuase they keep the body warm whilst allowing the extremities to stay cool. You can layer them up nicely creating some nice looks for both on and off the bicycle.
This one above is from Monki, its cropped to work nicely with layers and features a gathered waistline. The fleece gilet below is from The North Face and has a price tag of £110. You can also find many others for lower prices as well from high street stores.
The nice thing about gilets are that you can either wear them as a base layer or a top layer and when you want to take it off, its small enough to fit into your bag or backpack or bicycle pannier.
Here are some guidelines for choosing the right jacket for cycling, when you don't specifically want a cycling jacket or coat.
1) Lightweight
2) Not too stiff
3) Bright colours
4) Not too Long
5) Easy to wash
6) Quick to dry
]]>As my bicycle was not insured, i had purchased it from a friend who built it about 10 years ago, i do not have any receipts for it. My attachment to my bicycle goes way beyond the monetary value of the bike, it has been my constant ride, my friend, my companion for over 10 years and now its gone, probably in the hands of a crack addict (yes the location where it was stolen is pretty dodgy).
So this blog post is not about what to do if your bike is stolen but what to do to avoid it being stolen in the first place.
1. Have 1 or two good locks
2. Lock it up even if its inside and you think its safe. If there is nothing physical to lock it to, then lock the frame to the wheel so at least if its stolen it will be more difficult to ride off on it. (it would have to be carried until the lock can be broken/cut)
3, Have it tagged, in case you can recover it through the police or a tracking company.
4. Attach an airtag to it, i did have one on, but then took it off for something i really wish i still had it on the bike so i could track it down. That is my biggest regret. We sell these bicycle bell airtag holders here
5. Decorate your bike so it looks ugly. You can use tape or sharpies. Make it look as unattractive as possible.
6. Don't have a brooks saddle. These saddles have a high re-sale market. So people steal bikes with these saddles to sell them. Just keep the saddle and parts as anonymous as possible. Refrain from buying expensive brand-name parts unless you always keep your bike inside somewhere very safe where it can't get stolen.
7. Lock your bike up correctly, use up to two bike locks, and make sure they are of a high standard. see video below
8. Remove your saddle, this makes it less attractive to ride away on.
9. Drop your chain, as above, it makes your bike look like it could be broken and deter the thief.
10. Thieves don’t like an audience, so lock your bike in a public place rather than down an alleyway. Try to lock your bike somewhere covered by CCTV. Always choose a place that is well lit.
11. Make your bike inconspicuous to bike thieves for example remove all lights, computers, cameras, and anything else that can be easily taken, and take steps to make it as inconspicuous as possible.
]]>I was deluded as to how difficult it was going to be, it was not impossible but i definitely pushed my Cancer ridden body to the limit.
This was a lighthouse on the tiny island off Menorca (and island off an island) and there is no one who lives on the island, there is just a lot of wildlife and a beautiful black and white graphic lighthouse that looks like it it out of a kids story book. Here is the Billow, the bag-pillow that i brought with me on the trip with the idea that i would use it as a pillow when sleeping on the beach It sort of worked , i also used it as a padding for my seat in the kayak, making it a bit softer on my bum.
My friend Kathryn took a few photos of me showing off the neon range of bags, mainly so i didn't feel so guilty about going on holidays whilst i should probably have been working on my flailing business.
The water was so changeable, sometimes it was smooth as a bathtub and sometimes it was like surfing. Just before i took this photo, i slipped on slimly rocks covered with moss.
This above is a double kayak that i started out on, the person on the back steers with foot pedals and the person at the front generally sets the pace with the rowing.
There were some absolutely dreamy stops. This one is called Es Mesquita, Google translate says it means 'Mosque' so maybe there is a history of Arabic culture around this area. Either way, the white buildings were a great backdrop to some photos featuring our neon bags - the neon pink rolltop backpack and the neon pink rolltop handlebar bar bag.
Here for context, is the whole island, the company that we used called Menora En Kayak is the oldest kayaking company in the island (i think) and they also offer an 8 day guided trip where you go around the whole island. Kathryn, my friend did this trip the previous year.
At the time i didn't really know exactly where were were going, the guide based our trip on the progress we made each day, if we were a slow group maybe we would have covered less distance and a stronger group may have covered more distance. I think this is a good idea as it really makes the trip a bit more relaxing and less frantic if we did have to reach a certain point at the end of each day, despite things like ability, weather, etc.
The original idea was that i would like nice pretty photos at all the stops but it was lucky we took these nice pictures at our very first stop because after this, everything was a bit grubbier, people were a bit tired-er and in general there was less focus on getting pretty pictures and more focus on resting, drying clothes and setting up camp.
One of the bright ideas i had when i landed in Menorca and headed to the capital Mahon. I got my hair braided on the street which kept it out of the way of my eyes and kept it relatively clean and tidy.
The flip flops that i bought minutes before the trip were also a great idea. I used them when i wanted dry feet when i wasn't wearing my neoprene water shoes. Even though your feet don't do alot of the work, they are resting against pedals and the floor so you can get blisters on the heels of your feet if you have fully open shoes. I left my trainers at the hotel and these blue flip flops became my main footwear when i was on dry land.
This location is called S'Algar, it was a little fishing port with a hotel. We had a drink there as a the sun set, it was truly a happy moment pulling in after kayaking for 5 + hours that day. There was a little football pitch at the back part of the beach and we camped on the left side shown in the photo below. Some of the other 7 people in the group slept in the arch ways. I had a very COLD sleep that night and woke up several times that night.
I should not be drinking alcohol these days with my cancer trying to overtake my body. However sometimes it is hard not to join in for a social drink. During this trip, i did have a couple, which was so welcomed after a full day in the sun kayaking. I absolutely loved the monotony and simplicity of the paddling when i would get into a nice rhythm. There was something very meditative about the experience.
I didn't realise that Menorca is quite an eco conscious island. From Trip Savvy "
While the other Balariac islands (Ibiza and Mallorca) spent decades catering to big resorts and tourists, Menorca did just the opposite, opting to keep hotels off its beaches and curtailing development. Now, the results are paying off.
The entire island was recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993 for its commitment to sustainability, protecting large parts of the island from being built on.1 For years, Menorca has mostly been visited by in-the-know Brits and Germans, but a hidden gem can only stay hidden for so long. As travelers continue to discover the island's unspoiled beauty, it’s gained a reputation as an off-the-radar alternative to Mallorca or Ibiza."
In this case it makes sense that my eco bags made from recycled nylon be associated and shot here on this beautiful island. I was so proud to be able to create all my bags going forward from recycled materials, its not much but it is something that i am proud of.
The trip came out of nowhere, and was certainly not planned, especially when the end of summer was drawing near and i fully thought that was it of sunshine until the next year. Coming from Australia, i must be deep down dependent on the sunshine. But i realise that the depression sets in when the sun starts going down and when it starts to get very chilly. One would ask the question - why the hell am i living in the UK?
Staring out to the ocean on the off chances that i had was so therapeutic for me. I had time to work through some thoughts that i have been having. I try not to be too deep about everything in my life as i know that i can be prone to be over thinking. However, sometimes its really important to step back from the daily grind of life and think about priorities from a different angle.
I had never really considered going to spain before. I had been to Barcelona before as a city break. The world is full of so many beautiful places that i can really understand why it was not on my radar. The previous summers i had been visiting Sweden (my wife's family) and also italy. Until this trip i had no idea how much i missed the actual ocean and forgot how beautiful it is to fall into warm water that is sparkling with turquoise. There were moments that i was looking at the water and thinking, 'oh my god, this is actual paradise'.
This stripey towel / scarf things i am wearing as a wrap around in the picture above (and many of the other pictures)
The rolltop satchel (bicycle handlebar bag) shown here is a design based on the waterproof requirements in the nautical world.
The trip that i went on was exhausting and in many ways i was ruined physically when it was finished However, for my mind, i did come back somewhat refreshed and maybe clear headed, the result is yet to be revealed. Sometimes you go on a trip almost expecting or wanting it to change you but in the end all it really does is give you a little space, a little break and recharging of the batteries.
Look at the colour of the water here. It is actually unbelievable! Kathryn was my captain on this double kayak here. We had things like water bottles and hats handing off the top of the boat, sunscreen and hats were definitely a must, being in the hot sun for most of the day.
Sometimes the water was very shallow, there were rocks and reefs especially when we were close to the coast. I really loved this part the best when you could see things like jellyfish and fish swimming around near the boat.
The trip was not without mishap, on night 2 i think i got bitten by some kind of giant menoran fly, (horse fly?) after a few antihistamine tablets and a few paracetamols and lots of sun screen, i got it more of less under control. My eye was swollen for a few days even after the trip so my take away for this is to bring a fly net for sleeping!
I woke up in the morning for a toilet break on the last night, finally i got some warmth after wearing all my clothes and snuggling up to Kathryn for some body warmth.
The meditative strokes of the paddles hitting the water really made me think about how important it is to keep momentum when rowing and also rowing.
I am really proud of myself that i survived the trip, i felt like i needed to push myself and try to cram in experiences into my life, given it might be limited in time compared to most other people. I am settling into normal life now in the UK with my kids and our routines, but i will always be able to look back on my photos in my phone to see the amazing time i had in Menorca in September 2023.

Well I do! And this is my one below in this box. I've cleared it out several times but it is still full of a mixture of cables that i think i might need one day! This lead me to think about how i could use these more sustainably and not just throw them out. Technology tends to become redundant so fast, so using cables out of the tech context really does make sense!
I rummage through it maybe once or twice a year looking for something that I usually don’t find, but then find a few things to throw out that are well and truly redundant and then put the box away to where it was. It got me thinking about sustainability and how we can reuse these pieces of plastic, metal and cord in creative ways. So I did a bit more research and found that some people already have done this, and some of the results are quite amazing!
This one is a fantastic useful fruit bag made from old orange wire.
Here is a basket made from upcycled wire with other materials. The sturdy nature of electrical cable lends itself well to being used for weaving and sculpting.

For his third solo exhibition with Lisson Gallery, Ai Weiwei has created a monumental new installation of bicycles as part of an ongoing series, ‘Forever’, as well as a number of hand-carved, domestic-scale copies – in various materials including wood, stainless steel and crystal – of some highly personal objects.
The piece above is called “Four Bicycles” (There Is Always One Direction) was made when artist Gabriel Orozco was living in Rotterdam, a city which abounds bicycles. The bicycles are not welded together; they are not completely changed from their original use as a mode of transport.

Perhaps one of the most famous bicycle related pieces of artwork is “Bicycle Wheel”, a readymade from Marcel Duchamp consisting of a bicycle fork with front wheel mounted upside-down on a wooden stool. In 1913 at his Paris studio Duchamp mounted the bicycle wheel upside down onto a stool, spinning it occasionally just to watch it.
This piece above is a modern dupe on the Mona Lisa showing her standing next to a modern day Colnago racing bike. Apparently this image was found on a poster in a bicycle cafe in Singapore.
Bike shop co-owner Christian Peterson came up with the clever concept to mount the shop's entire inventory of 120 bicycles on the exterior wall of the store. Not only does it a brilliant advertising idea for the bike shop below but it also is a striking 3 dimensional street art piece that is so relatable to many cities around the world.

Jean Metzinger, At the Velodrome, 1912.
Futurist artists and poets, who saw physical activity as an integral part of human life, aimed at transmitting vital and creative energies. In fact, the exponents of this movement were characterized by a continuous and restless motion. The aforementioned ideology and interest in the bicycle took shape in many masterpieces of the genre, such as, for example, Umberto Boccioni's Dynamism of a Cyclist (1913), Gerardo Dottori's Cyclist (1914), Mario Sironi's The Cyclist(1916) and Fortunato Depero's Cyclists (1922).

Electric bikes - questions to ask yourself when buying
]]>One of the best ways to manage your online shopping is to avoid social media and limit how it influences your purchasing decisions. It’s quite fascinating and rather problematic just how social media impacts spending habits for many online users. For starters, users are now more likely to buy something just because they saw an influencer post about it on their feed.
Brands also have their own social pages now, so you still get ads even if you turn off ads. On top of that, 86 per cent of marketers use shoppable links, making it that much easier to simply buy something as you see it. If you minimise your social media time and make sure that you are wary of influencer content, you can limit unnecessary buying.
There are many reasons that people may buy on impulse, but it often comes down to sales, emotional triggers, social pressure, or generally impulsive behaviour. It’s important to be mindful and make sure that you don’t buy anything you won’t actually use. Too often, people buy things on a whim just for them to collect dust in a corner.
One of the best ways to make your daily life more sustainable is to consider whether you really plan to use something before buying it. This applies to both wants and needs, as it helps you make your way to less wasteful choices. It also lessens the buyer’s remorse you might have from an item you might later realise wasn’t worth the money.
Consolidated shipping is sustainable in many ways, as it can reduce the carbon footprint of shipments by batching together your orders and it also decreases the shipping costs you have to pay.
You can also offset the emissions from your order by choosing stores and methods that are more eco-friendly. Cycling is a great means of transport as it does not produce any emissions, and there are many delivery services and companies that make use of bike delivery these days to have cost-friendly means to aid the environment. Sure, it might mean you don’t get your delivery quite as quickly, but it’s a pretty small adjustment to make.
Reusing goods that are perfectly good can be another way to spend sustainably. It’s (usually) a fraction of the cost of a brand-new item and also extends the lifespan of the product by staying in use. Instead of things just getting discarded into a trash pile, they get a second wind with a new owner.
If you’re wary of buying things from random sellers online, you’ll find that there are plenty of legitimate secondhand markets that have online stores. In 2021, there were 4,082 active secondhand stores in the UK. The options are there, and you may just be surprised at what hidden gems you find.
Much of the waste and environmental impact of online shopping comes from packaging. It accounts for about 40% of all plastic produced, and the UK generated 2.5 million metric tons of it in the last year. Though it may not seem like much to you, opting for minimal packaging can do wonders if you frequently shop online.
Alternatively, you can also check out stores or brands that use eco-friendly materials. Nowadays, you see mindful brands use upcycled bags, biodegradable packaging peanuts, cornstarch packaging containers, and paper wrap to contain products in a way that is much more forgiving for the environment.

]]>So i have been researching ways to help fund raise for this event relating to my business and the business of bicycles in general. Here is a list of ways to fund raise and also keep fit and promote cycling at the same time.
Organise a jumble sale where people can bring parts and bikes in to donate and sell them to the public. Its a great way for people to get rid of things they don't use and a way raise money at the same time. You can approach local bike shops to donate things for this sale and perhaps even do the sale at the school or club for ease of logistics after school or even on a weekend.
You can organise a bike ride (with sponsorship from local businesses to provide a picnic at the end of the ride or snacks and drinks along the way. You can also get t-shirts printed for a local business where you provide advertising for the business in return forr money to go towards the fundraising goal.
Similar to the bike jumble sale but an online virtual version requiring less logistics. People donate unused bicycles and the bikes are auctioned off online. There are several online platforms that you can use to host the auction, ones that take less commission due to the fact that the auction is to raise money for a not-for-profit. organisation.
You can organise a bike race treasure hunt where players - a group consisting of an adult and a child enter to win a prize. A treasure hunt works by hiding clues and the treasure. The clues can be simple drawings that the participants have to find. Each clue tells your child where to find the next clue. The final clue leads to the treasure. There is a map (of the local area) and if the teams get back to the final end point with the treasure it means they have been successful in finding all the clues. Its also a lot of fun for a day out.
Similar to the treasure hunt, this uses a checklist, the particpants have to find all the items on the list and record them either with a camera phone or physically collect them. The team who gets all of the first wins. You can make money. from this by charging an entry fee for participants, and getting the prize donated by a local business.
This can also be combined with riding a scooter or walking to school. Everyone who does this donates £1 and its a way to raise some money whilst keeping everyone fit and aware of the benefits of exercise and fresh air at the same time.
Similar to car washing , the school could hold a bike washing afternoon where volunteers offer to wash and clean your bicycle for a set fee. This could be done after school one day whilst also selling food or having a bake sale whilst the people wait for their bicycles to be cleaned. You can do a slightly more professional version of this where you get qualified bicycle mechanics to ccome and check over bikes at the school gate for a small fee. The local businesses volunteer their time whilst also marketing their local business at the same time. Its a win win.

]]>Nowadays, gaming on our miniature communication tools has never been so popular. A selection of interesting statistics highlight just how far mobile gaming has come, be it the $184 billion generated in 2022 by all types of mobile games or the fact that this continually expanding area of gaming is expected to grow to $419 billion by 2027, according to Statista. Essentially, smartphone gaming’s package is appealing to people everywhere in 2023. Below is a few reasons as to why.
First and foremost, the main reason why smartphone gaming appeals to millions of us on earth in 2023 is due to the convenience it provides. Compared to PC and console gaming, for instance, smartphone gaming can be enjoyed while out and about, therefore providing a portable gaming service that can be loaded up in seconds. The games are genuinely fun these days, they generally cater for casual gaming audiences, and they don’t require the same time and dedication as a console product typically needs. Whether it’s through an internet browser or in the App Store, games on a mobile phone device can be sampled with ease alongside a social media binge or while talking to loved ones on WhatsApp. For us busy humans of today who want instant entertainment that can be fired up in seconds, gaming on our phones represents the perfect option.
In the past, smartphone gaming’s offering was fairly limited. Games like Snake initially appealed before a wave of puzzle and brain training products took over. Nowadays, though, given the improvements made in the smartphones of today, the games they can handle are now even more detailed. Offering much-improved graphics and better gameplay overall, the sheer amount of viable gaming opportunities is impressive. From console-quality releases that have broken records like PUBG Mobile, to glorious adventure titles like Genshin Impact, plus a themed slot game like Esmeralda, a release that is based on the heroine from Victor Hugo’s exciting tale “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, there is something for everyone on a smartphone device. Games can also be improved further with the purchase of a gaming accessory, with mobile gamers opting for products like earbuds and joysticks.
Stigma around gaming has changed
The image above shows Chen San-yuan, the Taiwanese “Pokémon Go grandpa,” has evolved his bike into a new form: a peacock-esque contraption with 64 smartphones mounted on the front. Chen originally went viral in 2018 after an image was shown of him playing Pokémon Go with 11 phones attached to his bike. Over the last two years, this iconic gamer has added more phones to his arsenal. In 2019, he was using 45 smartphones concurrently as he biked around trying to catch ‘em all.
Another key reason behind the rise in the amount of smartphone gamers could be down to the notable changes in the stigma around gaming. In previous times, gaming was seen as a negative influence on people, perhaps fuelling a sedentary lifestyle and only really being associated with younger audiences. That couldn’t be further from the truth in the modern environment, though. In 2023, people are keeping fit while gaming through augmented reality products like Pokemon Go, while the sheer amount of gaming products that have come to the fore has resulted in a diverse collection of games that appeal to a wide variety of target audiences. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to see elderly people exploring puzzle games on a smartphone device, while parents also fight off boredom with games like Subway Surfers and Candy Crush Saga. Put simply, everyone is gaming on a smartphone device right now, and it’s easy to see why given the enhanced products that are aimed at us all.

]]>The polite bike 'bell'. Gently warn others of your presence with the soft sound of wood. Each wood has a unique sound. Made in Japan. These bike bells are lovingly crafted and focus not just on the look but on the sound that they create when 'dinged', a more gentle approach ensures that fellow cyclists are not offended when you are simply warning them of danger ahead or of other safety concerns. I would love to try out one of these crafted wooden bike bells, but i'm not sure that they would stand up to the noise and traffic of hackney!
These bells are up-cycled and customised by the user. They show personalisation and creativity.
This one above is a crocheted cover to a bike bell, perhaps it also muffles the sound a bit. Below is a large white bike bell drawn on with marker, a comment on the superior sustainability of riding a bike.
When doing research on bike accessories i came across the electric bike bell, here below is an example. It has a few different modes and options for sounds and is weather and shock resistant. Personally i think it is a bit unnecessary, like re-inventing the wheel but it could be a fun gadget to have. I have had bike bells stolen in the past, so i wouldn't have something like this that would attract the attention of thieves. But i definitely would like to have a play around with this electric bike bell and hear some of the sounds that it makes. This one from amazon retails for approx £11 but you also need to keep it charged or buy batteries for it. I think it could be a fun gadget for a kids bike perhaps a good stocking filler for a child learning to ride a bicycle.
Use their bell to signal to people walking and slower riders ahead they need to pass. Give enough warning to allow people to react. You should try to use the bicycle bell only when necessary. Here are some tips on bicycle bell usage etiquette.
1) do a loud ding to pedestrians if they are walking towards danger or not seeing a bicycle coming
2) when. you are going through a tunnel on a canal tow bath, ring your bell twice in quick succession as a way of communicating that you are coming through the tunnel when there is only room for one bicycle to pass.
3) warn pedestrians or fellow cyclists of your approach by dinging the bell a few times softly
4) If you don't have a bell you can also use your voice, by calling out "coming" or "bike coming" as a way to warn people that you are near or about to pass someone.
5) don't ding the bell LOUDLY or SHOUT unless danger is imminent. This can scare people and is considered rude. However there are times where its necessary to do this in order to avoid an accident or crash happening.
6) ding Twice when approaching from behind someone, it is a slightly more polite and has a less aggressive tone to it.
7) avoid ringing the bell too late for example after the danger point has passed, this will just confuse people.
8) don't 'ding' excessively or unnecessarily

Firstly, cycling does not produce any emissions, and so it does not contribute to air pollution. Unlike cars, which release harmful chemicals into the environment, bicycles run on human power and leave only the smallest of carbon footprints. This means that if more people cycle, there will be fewer fumes in the air. This is especially crucial in densely populated urban areas that are often plagued by high levels of pollution.
Secondly, the production of bicycles requires fewer resources and energy than the manufacturing of motor vehicles. The production of cars requires the use of fossil fuels and generates toxic waste that harms the environment. Bicycles are relatively simple machines that require fewer raw materials to produce. What's more, since they do not run on petrol or diesel, they need less maintenance and consume fewer resources in the long term.
Thirdly, by cycling more, people can reduce their dependence on traditional modes of transport, such as cars and buses. This helps in preserving natural resources such as oil, gas, and coal that are used to produce fuel. It also leads to fewer greenhouse gas emissions, helping to reduce climate change, and contributing to a healthier planet.
Lastly, cycling can be an enjoyable way to explore the outdoors, connect with nature, and improve your mental and physical wellbeing. It's an excellent form of exercise that can help people improve their cardiovascular health, reduce stress levels, and boost their mood. By choosing to cycle instead of drive, people can also make time to appreciate the natural environment, pause to enjoy and embrace the sights and sounds of nature.
In conclusion, the benefits of cycling for the environment are many. It is an eco-friendly mode of transportation that emits no pollutants, uses fewer resources, and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions. By making a conscious effort to cycle more, people can help preserve natural resources, reduce air pollution, and contribute to a healthier planet. Additionally, cycling is also a great way to stay active, connect with nature, and improve overall physical and mental wellbeing. Therefore, we should encourage more people to embrace cycling as an alternative method of transportation.
In conclusion, while there may be some rare cases where it may be okay not to wear a bike helmet when cycling, the bottom line is, and it's always prudent to consider safety first. With the great advancement in technology, helmets have indeed become more comfortable and aerodynamic, making it easier to wear and providing better protection as well, it’s best for cyclists to prioritize safety and always wear a helmet when out cycling in the great outdoors.
This clever and simple basket pannier is perfect for carrying around own bag or backpack or as seen here, other things that don't necessarily fit into traditional shapes. I love this image showing a pile of books in this bicycle pannier basket, perfect for a mobile library! you can learn more about this item at Bobbin bikes.
This woven basket double pannier mimics the design of a more modern pannier bag but made from a traditional natural material. The design offers a timeless romantic feel, i imagine riding along a tow path in France collecting flowers or cheese at a local farmers market and riding home to the cottage. Braided by hand, and made by UK London based company Toast, the bags are made by artisans in Morocco from a natural reed that grows wild on the banks of nearby rivers.
This person shows step by step how to make a bicycle pannier bag out of an old pair of trousers, this is a true upcycling technique!
The types of items you need are not as techical as you would imagine, have a look at the image below showing all you need to upcycle an old pair of trousers into a bicycle pannier bag.
Using the ¼” bit, drill a hole at each mark. Trim away any extra bits of plastic. Repeat with the second bucket."
The types of things that you might want a pair of bucket panniers are include for fishing, cleaning window business, or even a trip to the local farmers market. The buckets are low cost and they are also easy to clean.
Above it a great invention / design / contraption called the Air Pannier which is basically a net pannier attachment which allows strange or large items to be attached to the bicycle. It is available to buy through etsy and as a product itself it doesn't look like much but i think it is absolutely ingenious! Here is the Air Pannier empty not on a bicycle, where it looks very much like some kind of a fishing net.
Here is the iconic ikea carrier bag which has been turned into a pannier bag. I have used the Rixen Kaul Kompakt Rail Pannier system. With this system you can create your own pannier bag out of any bag or shopper using this product. This item comes as a set with all the bolts and backing plate to attach to your own bag.
You can buy it here on the Goodordering website. You can either buy the bag already fitted with the pannier rack or you can do it yourself and buy just the kompakt system and fit it to any of your own bags.
It took only about 10 minutes to attach the Kompakt Rail system to the ikea bag. I used a re-enforcement on the inside in the form of a piece of polypropylene 300 micron sheet. which adds a bit of stability to the bag, However it would be probably fine without it too.
The bag is shown here with the added hardware, and the post originally went viral on tiktok, you can see it here. This bag was great to carry around items that are lightweight but bulky such as cushions or a blanket. The ikea bag itself is designed to be strong but also relatively disposable. When the bag gets worn out, the hardware can simply be removed and reused on a new ikea bag or a different bag.
Some other innovative contraptions include more customised bungee straps that can attach items onto the top of the pannier rack such as the below item.

I occasionally still drink, a glass of nice champagne here, a watermelon margarita made by my friend Johan at Eurovision, i find it difficult to stop drinking here and there and my oncologist even said i should think of drinking like a treat, not the norm, but not to be too hard on myself and make sure i have things to look forward to. My onco is fantastic and i really respect and listen to his advice but still, hes not me, hes not the one with cancer.
The difficult thing with stopping drinking with cancer is that , unlike other people who have stopped drinking due to having a 'problem' or its ruined their lives etc, alcohol never specifically ruined my life and i can drink to moderation these days. The problem is that alcohol contains lots of sugar and my type of cancer feeds off sugar. I need to stop having any kinds of drinks that contain sugar. For example in my opinion its healthier for me to have a shot of 100% agave tequila than a glass of coco cola. Also, non alcoholic drinks that are high in sugar are worse for me than a low sugar alcoholic drink.
So what are my tips? in this blog post i share with you some of the solutions i have come up with in relation to drinking with cancer. Trying to be the healthiest i can be and how alcohol plays a part in my current life. Its not that easy and i don't always manage to practice what i preach but here is how i have managed to stay relatively healthy for the last 5 years.
1. Get better at saying no
2. Have a big glass of water with vinegar in it before going out
3. Slimline Tonic water
4. Add lime and ice and use nice glasses
5. Get back on the path after a relapse
6. Tell everyone you want to stop having sugar / stopped drinking
7. Botanical spirits
8. Remove sweet drinks from the house
9. Replace alcohol with healthier addictions
10. Hang out with the kids
I will now elaborate on the above points. In many ways these points are similar to the advice i got from listening to podcasts and following IG accounts of people who have stopped drinking alcohol in a non-cancer related context. However the key differences is that i approach alcohol in a way where i allow myself to have a few drinks here and there, i just need to make it a much smaller part of my life. Fortunately i have never counted the days of my sobriety, mainly because i'm not actually sober, i need to have different metrics and still struggle with this grey area when it comes to drinking.
I avoid straight drinking situations, for example going to the pub where its just 100% about drinking, this is not a context that is going to help me stay sober. If you are not yet ready to go to parties where everyone is going to be drinking, then don't go. If i put myself smack bang in the middle of temptation, i am much more likely to drink and regret it.
Vinegar with water has been proven to reduce spikes in blood sugar and i have been drinking water with cider vinegear in the mornings for a little while. I find this helps with drinking less alcohol. Here is the science
"The acetic acid in vinegar slows down the rate at which the stomach empties the food you've eaten into the small intestine, which in turn slows the breakdown of carbohydrates and gives the body more time to remove glucose from the blood. This ultimately reduces the spike in blood sugar you'd typically see after eating."
Slimline Tonic water naturally tastes very similar to a gin and tonic and its an easy go-to drink for me to have when i am out. I find that having a drink in my hand naturally stops people from asking me if i want a drink, even if it is just tonic or fizzy water with a bit of lime in it. Half the battle is saying no to well meaning hosts!
Even a fizzy water will feel special if you drink it out of a nice glass and add garnishes and nice ice. I have been really zooming into beautifully square ice cubes made using silicone trays (muji do a nice one), citrus and other accessories that can elevate a non-alcoholic drink to star status. As with most things it’s the dopamine released in the preparation of the cocktail that is often the most enjoyable part.
If you drink more than you wanted to one weekend, or one evening, or even one week, don't give up, just get back on it, and forgive yourself and try to stay positive.
By telling my kids that i am not drinking, and not eating sweets such as my favourite which is ice cream, they help me avoid these things by distracting me and reminding me that i should not consume these things. It is a well known fact that when other people (especially kids) hold you accountable it is easier to follow through with your goals.
There are many nice spirits you can buy to replace things like gin and vodka for mixed drinks (my normal go-to) however these can also be quite pricey. At times i feel that these are worrth it and my favourite are Seedlip, and 0.0 gin from Gordons.
However, there are many botanicals you can use for a fraction of the price to make drinks that mimic the botanical vibe of gin. I love this one containing spices and herbs such as cardamon, mint, camomile (a simple teabag)
This is a good one for helping with self discipline. If you can't or shouldn't eat it then don't have it in front of your face tempting you every time you walk into the kitchen. I put the fruit bowl front and centre and i'm then more likely to quench my impulse.
Getting into exercise is the obvious one here but there also other "addictions" that not involve consuming sugar, get creative here!
At parties or bbqs and social gatherings where alcohol plays a part, i can be found hanging out with the kids, i let the adults drink and once i get bored of that i find it much more interesting hanging out with the kids, i love the joy where kids can have so much fun without a drop of alcohol, its a good reminder that the fun, joy and happiness don't not come out of a bottle, no matter how pretty that bottle looks!!k
The billow and the tartan picnic pannier are the perfect bags for packing a few drinks for the park. Check them out now!
Here are some resources that have helped me with replacing alcohol. because its not the alcohol specifically i'm trying to avoid, mocktails high in sugar are just as bad for me.

Its not a common way to do laundry these days, but the aesthetic and culture of the laundrette (laundromat) is one that not just I find pleasing. Maybe its the repetitive circular motion of clothes tumbling around, the retro machinery of a bygone era or the interesting people you can meet at an urban laundrette - especially late at night! If anyone has seen the latest block buster film - you may have seen some very delicious laundrette scenes that have so clearly inspired my latest range of bags.
This film left me feeling a little baffled and ruffled like, i had, myself been through a cycle in one of the washing machines shown below. However there were many scenes such as these ones below. It was so surprising to find out that the scenes in the film were shot in a real laundromat in San Francisco.
The Wang family’s laundromat featured in blockbuster film "Everything everywhere all at once" was shot at a real laundromat in San Fernando, California. The film is partly about a Chinese immigrant mother's world view and her relationship with her American born daughter, it is also about the metaverse, untapped potential, tax and kung fu. Did you enjoy this film?
The whole range of the Goodordering Laundrette range aka the tartan range available on our online shop and selected retailers now.
This photoshoot was done in Hackney central at a local laundrette to me. I took in a load of washing to do and the owners kindly allowed me to take some photos. The bags include the rolltop backpack, the beloved new and original Billow and the tartan bum bag, these are some of my favourite bags in this range.
The tartan range was inspired by the iconic laundry bag fabric. Known to everyone all around the world in slightly different guises, a travel bag, a laundry, a moving bag. Widely available and extremely affordable, the laundry bag is bought from any 2 dollar shop / pound store or corner hardware home store around the world. The familiarity of the woven fabric invokes a nostalgic feeling. We have re-invented this fabric for higher durability, converting the woven fabric into a print on a recycled nylon fabric. The result is sustainable and useful for everyday use, but will last a lot longer that the iconic bag that it is inspired by.

But one of the common pitfalls for beginners is spending a small fortune on clothes and accessories. If you are serious about getting into cycling you will want to spend good money on a bike. But there is so much on the market that you could easily become confused and dip too far into your rainy day funds. So here’s a quick guide to what you should be looking for when you are getting ready to get on your bike.
The Basics
This is probably the most obvious one – and we’re not going to spend too much time on it because we are concentrating more on the apparel. But you will need to find a decent bike. You will probably want to get a road bike unless you know that you want to off-road as well.
You could always go crazy and spend thousands on the type of bike you see racing in the Tour de France. But for beginners, bikes at around the £500 mark are just fine. You will also be able to spend much less than that if you can find a good second-hand one.
Clothing & Accessories
Before you spend any money – including on the bike itself – you need to evaluate your own personal needs. What do you want to get out of this? And when will you be cycling? This will sift out a lot of the supposed essentials that you may read about and narrow down your expenses to what you will actually use.
Whatever type of cycling you are planning on, you should invest in some padded shorts. Don’t be too proud about this – you will definitely need to protect your backside. You should also get some cycling-specific tops that are able to keep you cool when you are hot and dry when it is raining.
If you need or want to carry items with you such as for a longer trip or camping trip, don't forget your Goodordering pannier bag - waterproof and spacious for whatever the weather.
Essential Extras
You should, of course, wear a helmet when you are out on the bike – and you may want to get some good sunglasses and sunscreen for your longer rides. A water bottle is another must, to keep you hydrated, and you can fit a special bottle cage to your bike for ease of use.
Make sure that you have a pump and some basic tools for any emergency as well. There are some great multi-tools on the market for cyclists that should get you out of any tricky situation. Or at the very least, they will help you get to a suitable stop-off point where you can ask for help.
Figure 2 You don’t have to spend too much on the tech side of things
Technology
This is where it is very easy to get carried away. You could get all the electronic gadgets to tell you where you are, how fast you have been going, and how quickly your heart is beating. But we think, to begin with, you should just actually go au naturel (as it were) and just simply enjoy your cycling.
But as you progress and get more confident with your cycling you may find that you want deeper insights into your trips and journeys. A cycle computer can record everything we mentioned as well as provide you with a GPS. But there are plenty of apps that do the same kind of job for much less.
Cycling Tips
Now that you have a good idea about the stuff that you need to buy before you set off, you just need to hit the open road and enjoy yourself. But you should also remember to always tell others where you are going if you are planning on a solo trip, or – even better – team up to make it a social occasion.
Have respect for other cyclists and for other road users and hopefully you will earn some back. Make sure that you get the essentials but don’t worry too much about spending too much. The main point of it all is to have some fun, after all.
